Queens Park Challenge Cup
|
On paper Dalziel could not have got a tougher draw in the first round of the Queens Park Challenge Cup, however a comprehensive win put them into the second round. Dalziel kicked off with the wind at their backs on a blustery day and immediately took the game to their hosts, and took the lead within 5 minutes when Garry McClymont fired in a low free kick from 20 yards that found the bottom corner. Some excellent passing moves by the visitors helped create more chances but Dalziel did not add to their lead for another 20 minutes when Garry McClymont got his second goal, a well directed header from 12 yards. The home side were not posing much of a threat at in the first half, a combination of good defending and playing against a blustery wind hindering any attacks. Dalziel's midfield were taking full advantage of the platform their defence provided, and after a David Jackson chip had come back of the bar, it was no surprise when the same player added a third goal just before half time. Dumbarton started the second half with more determination and with the elements now in their favour, but the main source of their attack was from set pieces, and when they did manage to get an effort on target Dalziel's keeper Andy Sweeney kept them out with two fabulous saves. Dalziel were always dangerous on the counter and when a Garry McClymont effort was blocked by the keeper Willie McCulloch followed up to head home from close range. In the later stages of the game Dalziel continued to hold any attacks at bay, and in the closing minutes David Jackson set up Gerry McShane who ran in from 30 yards out and fired the ball into the net to confirm an excellent result for the Motherwell side.
