Dalziel hold on for away win
|
Dalziel progressed into the knock out stages of the league cup, but only after they made heavy weather beating a rugged Milngavie side.
Dalziel opened brightly and were 3 up within the first twenty minutes, 2 goals from Willie McCulloch and a goal from Scott Kyle gave the visitors a commanding and comfortable lead at half time. Dalziel continued to dominate in the early part of the second half, and could, and should have added to their lead. The home side, however had other ideas and after an hour they scored to pull themselves back into the game. This goal seemed to give Milngavie a belief that they had nothing to lose and they started to pressurise the Dalziel defence, and with twenty minutes left they added a second goal.
Dalziel continued to make and squander chances, and their passing became careless as the home side pushed for the equaliser. The visitors defence was becoming more and more frantic as Milngavie pushed forward, but eventually Dalziel managed to put a decent move together that allowed Darren Cahill to take the ball past the keeper and knock it into the empty net. This goal should have made the final 10 minutes more comfortable for Dalziel, but Milngavie had not given up and within 3 minutes they scored a third goal that made for a nervy end to the game.
The club are planning an old-crocks game, followed by a fund raising lunch at Dalziel Park on Saturday 6 October, more details will be available shortly.
