The opening game of the season
|
Dalziel got their season off on the right note in dreadful conditions at Dalziel Park, incessant rain making the surface very difficult for both teams.
Neither side made any real chances in the opening 30 minutes as the players struggled with the conditions. Dalziel were, however enjoying the bulk of possession and took the lead on 35 minutes when strong pressure on the home defence gave Garry McClymont the chance to feed Jamie McDonald who drilled the ball home. The second half followed a similar pattern with Dalziel controlling the pace of the game, but without getting the crucial second goal. The home side kept the pressure on their visitors, restricting Bearsden to hitting on the counter attack. The killer goal finally arrived with 15 minutes left when substitute Willie McCulloch, with his first touch! deftly headed home a cross from Gerry Jamieson. The visitors pushed to pull a goal back and started leaving gaps in defence, but despite creating a number of openings, Dalziel failed to add to their 2 goal advantage.
